Grounding , our site-specific work in Riverside, California responding to sites and monuments representing the civil rights movement, was recognized as a Communications Merit Winner by the American Planning Association Inland Empire Section. This award was presented at the 2025 Awards Gala, in community with the region’s innovative plans and projects, distinguished members of the planning profession, community members and elected officials enhancing quality of life, and outstanding student planners. Grateful to celebrate with collaborator and friend Miguel Vazquez, FAICP, who conceived of this multi-faceted project with me, and Sandy Chandler, AICP, who supported the project as an advisor and introduced us at our culminating performance at the City of Riverside Main Public Library.

Choreographed and performed by Brittany Delany in collaboration with Riverside dancers Ana Cruz, Crystal Edwards, Edwin Sigüenza and Aisha Stewart, the ensemble dance emphasizes social dance, improvisation, collective joy and resilience.

This project asks, ‘How can dance illuminate sites and monuments representing the civil rights movement?’ The site-specific performance emerged at the Riverside Main Library, across from the Civil Rights Institute of Southern Inland California, on September 30, 2024.
